Just finished! Capturing a sense of time, place and feeling - grace is a magical thing.

I love using totally ordinary tourist maps and scoring, drawing, scratching, pouring, dousing, shaking paint, ink, gold paste, wax, oil to just get something down about how I feel about a place. They often disintegrate a bit so it’s not until it’s totally dry that you can see the translucent layers and marks.

These four pieces are about wild weather near the city. Raging storms, seas and beautiful skies and tides right by us.

I then took the surface designs and translated into porcelain cups.

I love it that I can see and remember the marks and the original bright colours and grids of the maps, even a ghostly shopping list comes through on one!

They are beautiful to drink from and chirpy to look at!

Capturing a sense of time, place and feeling - grace is a magical thing.

Band on the run, Blackfriars Bridge

I like capturing weather that makes you feel something. It’s often when you notice the good things going on. I was standing on Blackfriars Bridge in London on the middle of a storm at around 6 in the evening.

From Oxo Tower I swung around to check how St Paul’s, the ugly skyscrapers, cranes with their blinking red warning lights and were doing under the glowering light.

Nearly running me over were a trio, instruments flying rushing to a gig on the SouthBank. I was so taken by the lady trumpeter, trench flying I just had to capture the whole troupe.

I tried drawing on flat paper, old paper and nothing worked. Too stiff, too dull, no movement. I put the idea to one side in my head.

Then one of my old bits of discarded dull tech turned up- a C19 stoneware jug, complete with salt glazed dimples.

This was what that story needed - something solid and in the round. The characters came back quickly which I scratched into paint revealing the glaze beneath. I was being too out there with the sky which I made pinks and yellows so I covered this up with deep blues and so not to lose the spirit of what I’d done, I scratched through quickly to reveal the vibrant colours underneath.

It’s now a lamp!

W I P Starting a new piece is so hard! Especially after a bit of a break. No option but to go for it with gusto and not think too much.

I’ve been playing around with what I call Re-Loving - re-imagining and re-purposing bits of C19th tech because they have beautiful shapes and are broken or untrendy - and can be transformed with love and imagination.

Like this terracotta cannon shaped chimney pot that I found badly chipped in a junk yard. I repaired it and painted a white base though its rather bumpy. I first tried drawing on it with paint and it didn’t work so now starting again …

I have plans! It involves ferns, ink and rumba. Yeh yeh I know. Watch this space

The best parties are random, mostly unplanned when people don’t really know each other. It just happens and seems like a good plan to celebrate something good.

Specially when across different ages, nationalities that can’t speak to each other and food that doesn’t even go together.

Some how it all works and is magical!

Throw in some friendly animals and a table slightly too small and you can’t go wrong.

Remembered faces from bus number 345 Peckham Rye on used crumpled paper

I drew these lovely guys with a stick for extra texture and beautiful random marks.

Sometimes I prefer to observe, feel, bottle rather than draw on the spot, especially when too obvious in public .

Then only at a later date - could be a few hours or weeks I can recover that feeling and put it down on whatever surface. I never take any reference photos.

Here I’ve used my own mixture of greeny-blue ink, drawing very rapidly when I got home and revelling in the blobs and scratches.

I drew these lovely guys with a stick for extra texture and beautiful random marks.

Then only at a later date - could be a few hours or weeks I can recover that feeling and put it down on whatever surface. I never take any reference photos.

It’s amazing what you find when you are not looking! I found this surprising tucked away urban oasis @elizabethstreetgarden on what had to be one of the hottest days of the year in New York. As dusk fell and people dispersed, a man walked passed me and turned saying, “all life is connection and it’s just magical here isn’t it”. The all life bit, he added, was from Martin Buber, not himself. Bless!

As dusk fell and people dispersed, a man walked passed me and turned saying, “all life is connection and it’s just magical here isn’t it”. If you are looking for a Zero Guilt creative process, well old scruffy cheap tourist maps are the instant solution. Great to scribble on with abandon, full of history and curvaceous contours. They also disintegrate nicely with any pressure or water and create fab unexpected textures.

They are perfect for embedding a sense of place. Here we were in Matera in Basilicata and experiencing a striking contrast of ancient cave and mid century icon icons ( one being human :) )

I am a huge fan of scratching and smudging my drawings and this seemed a perfect excuse to echo the hewn rock - actually it’s just fun and energising.

Text says “Pink Cave with 3 mid century modern icons with a bowl of oranges and a quince” - done with my fave bamboo pen and fluorescent pink ink.

Hola! Here’s is a bright bit of Flotsam turned flatform high up on my wall. It’s a found bit of wrecked oak fishing boat with the original rope, caulk and orange fishing net caught between the layers. The colour is all original.

Magical. I found on the city strand in Foz do Douro, Porto where we lived for a while.

I turned it round and round in my hands until what it was going to be came to me. I feel it is a kind of talisman of connection and communication.

I love how the Japanese are intentional about their spaces. That spaces can be waiting and preparing for people to be within them is beautiful.

Art has a big role to play in setting this intention. Here this funny bit of flotsam seems perfect for setting the the tone of this space as all about home as a place of joyous connection.

Out Out in Bristol Post

Having been graced with so many Out-out nights in Bristol with my daughter was without doubt one of my big highlights of 2023!

I had to capture some of these moments out clubbing - everyone was so friendly, we had such a hoot in different haunts.

Drawn on old wall paper, I have experimented with pastel for the first time overlaying with wax, crayon and finishing off with my favourite Amsterdam fluorescent pink with Chinese bamboo wobbly dip pen.

I did the whole thing quickly in one go from the heart.

It reads - “Out Out in Bristol, dance me into the deep Madrugada and wake me up to hair of the dog and poached eggs on toast” sheer fun! Thanks @hollyadams_

Out Out in Bristol Post

Having been graced with so many Out-out nights in Bristol with my daughter was without doubt one of my big highlights of 2023!

Sometimes the best thing to do is nothing …. and just capture a moment in time.
A favourite pastime of mine is a micro residence where I stand still for a couple of minutes and clock the world, bottling the experience.

Here I am in Waterloo Station under the watchful eyes of the gorgeous goddesses carved high up in the arches. Say hello to Tokyo and the Goddess, Red Bicycle and the Goddess and the Giant Plant Pot and the Goddess - all spotted within 2 minutes.

I imagined them looking down at the funny goings on and commenting.

It seemed a useful thing to re purpose some old fire bricks on which to paste the drawings on old cardboard using smudged crayon, ink and gold paste to make the ordinary seem damn amazing.

There is something so satisfying about creating three dimensional things out of old stuff - now I have to find a wall for them!
